Legal requirements for Weddings in Scotland
There is no residency law in Scotland for those couples outside the UK wishing to get married in Scotland. This means if you wish, and as long as all your legal documents are in order, you can be married in Scotland within a short period of arrival.
In order you may keep up to date with the legal requirements of the Registrar General of Scotland we refer you to the following website which covers every aspect of the legal requirements and expectations from couples wishing to marry within Scotland:-
Religious Ceremonies
Religious ceremonies may take place in a church, as long as you seek the permission of the parish minister. Alternatively, You may like the idea of being married in a place of special meaning to you both – or a particular garden, or historical site, on a hilltop, in a castle, whatever you wish we will do our utmost to make your dreams come true, as we say, just leave it to us!
Civil Ceremonies
A civil marriage can take place either at the registrar’s office or in a venue which holds a licence for civil marriages. See the above link.
Humanist Ceremonies
Humanist ceremonies have become legal in Scotland – which gives couples a further choice of the type of ceremony they wish to have.
A humanist wedding/affirmation can take place anywhere and is designed to suit the Bridal couple. It is dignified and serious, but with the religious element replaced by words and music which have real meaning for the couple. They can be as romantic and creative in designing their ceremony along with the celebrant.
For further information please look at the following link:-
At all Wedding Ceremonies whether Religious, Civil or Humanist, the bridal couple, along with their 2 witnesses and their celebrant will sign a legal document called a Marriage Schedule which is produced by the Registrar General of Scotland. This document once signed is legal anywhere in the world.
