Scottish Wedding Anniversary for Texas - Litu

You can imagine our excitement when Geoff and Diana called us to say they were thinking about coming back to Scotland to celebrate their 10th anniversary and would we be able to help them put the celebration together.  We had kept in touch all those years since we organised their wedding in 2000, and what a treat to do this, to meet their children and to see them all again! We were both thrilled and honoured to be asked, they had such a beautiful wedding, and now wanted to come over from their hometown in Dallas Texas with friends and family to celebrate this special occasion.

Texas couple Geoff and Diana in ScotlandThere is a wonderful story of the link between Texas and Scotland for the Newton family, Diana’s great grandfather was a Scot, he hailed from Blairgowrie in Perthshire and moved to Aberdeen. At a young age he left home, walking to the harbour he stowed away on a ship going to America, eventually revealed himself to the crew when he worked for his passage.  Once he got to New York, he got off the ship and walked around the docks and surrounding area.  He was so overwhelmed by the size of the city, the people and the mass chaos of New York, he went straight back to the ship and asked if he could work his passage back to Scotland!  About two years later, he did the very same journey, and that time he stayed in the US.  He worked his way out west, doing various jobs along the way for a few months at a time.  He finally made enough money in order to buy himself a new set of clothes, and show himself to some distant relatives in Philadelphia.  He was a very proud Scot, and he did not want to show up on their doorstep with nothing to show for himself.  Finally he ended up going to medical school and became a doctor in Philadelphia. He had five sons and one daughter.  His daughter is Diana’s grandmother.

Texas Wedding Anniversary in ScotlandSo When Diana was planning their wedding back in 2000 she had a genuine wish to come to Scotland back to her routes to be married in the country her great grandfather originated from, and for her this was the only place in the world she wanted to marry Geoff. I think her mum initially had different thoughts and ideas of where the wedding would be held, she asked Diana to Sleep on it and suggested they would discuss it in the morning! Diana’s plan, even after sleep, had not changed, this was her only wish, and so the planning process began and how we were lucky enough to meet the Newton Clan 10 years ago.

There are so many wonderful venues in Scotland, all with their own unique ambiance and style, but after lots of discussions back and forth and looking at different photos of venues, Geoff and Diana finally settled on beautiful Archerfield House – despite the fact they had no idea where it was or what it was like we knew it was the right place for them, it has grandeur without being stuffy, it has a warm welcoming ambiance with a feel of walking into someone’s home and that’s exactly what they wanted to create for their friends and family, somewhere everyone could relax and have a great weekend together – Scotland is so small its easy to get together with friends but the United States is vast and people don’t often get that chance to all come together unless its for such a celebration. It was a wonderful sight to see all these children getting together too – many of whom had not met each other, and they were all so beautifully behaved.
Strangely enough if you look from Archerfield ‘s shores to the north east over the Firth of Forth you can see Arbroath

Texas Wedding Anniversy in ScotlandEveryone was so excited to be in Scotland – there is apparently a huge affiliation between the Texans and the Scots, which is great and something we didn’t totally appreciate. And so to kick off Friday evening all the adults gathered in the drawing room for a whisky tasting, its such an interesting hour learning about the whisky, where it comes from and how it’s made, and of course to sample it! All the children had their own party downstairs and were kept busy by the babysitters. Dinner followed with the piper leading everyone into the dining room – and no Scottish dinner would be complete without a Haggis which was addressed by the piper. Everyone enjoyed a relaxing evening reminiscing and catching up with each other.

The following morning the boys and girls split – the boys all went to play golf or clay (skeet) shooting and the girls all chilled out having a pamper day at Archerfield, and the kids, well they just had fun and games again with the babysitters, they had endless grounds to play in and everyone was happy!

That evening prior to drinks Diana’s wedding photographer took photos of all the families and friends to record this special time. How lovely for their photographer to be able to do this once again – this wasn’t like work, this was a real treat for all of us!!
A champagne reception was held prior to another special dinner and a cake cutting ceremony to mark the occasion. After dinner the fun started, the ceilidh dancing! Nobody had ever done ceilidh, but they all had fun learning – I suppose when you are not used to it, it is a little confusing but it’s amazing how everyone grasped it and it caused great hilarity and enjoyment. Sunday brought the departure of what had been a fantastic weekend for everyone, for children, friends, family and definitely for us – it was a special event to put together for special people and we felt very honoured to do so – here’s wishing you both well for the next 10 years,  when we will maybe do it all over again, well Diana’s mum thinks we should repeat it in another five!

If this is what the Texan Scottish celebration is all about – let’s do more of it. – Love to you all what a fantastic memory and what an honour for all of us.

Diana and Geoffs Kind Comments: "We have been so fortunate to have had Kimmie and George plan not one, but two spectacular parties for us. Our wedding was absolutely perfect, down to every detail 10 years ago.Naturally, we wanted to return to Scotland to celebrate our ten-year anniversary, and we would not have even considered doing it without Kimmie and George's help! Since we live in Texas, we were not able to explore the venues or make an informed decision in person on what location was best. We needed the expertise and experience of Kimmie and George to guide us. They not only guided us perfectly on each and every detail for us and our guests, but they made the whole process fun and easy. They are just wonderful to work with! Although we had no idea what Archerfield would really be like, we never worried that it would not be exactly to our liking. We knew from our wedding ten years earlier that George and Kimmie would see to every detail and help us make the right choice. They far exceeded our expectations yet again, and our friends and family have not stopped talking about how special the weekend was! LITU, through the special talents of Kimmie and George, once again helped us create one of the happiest memories of our lives. -- Diana & Geoff"
