A Winter's Tale

Stephen was a staunch Scot – raised and educated in Scotland, it was his dream when he met his bride, to come back to Scotland and have their wedding. Vicky, who knew and loved Scotland from all the trips they had made, also loved the idea, and so our journey together began! Having looked at several venues we headed north to Drumtochty Castle which we felt would fit all of their criteria and more, outcome was, they both fell in love with the whole idea and so Drumtochty was their dream venue for their special day.
A December wedding, nice crisp days and sunshine, maybe a little snow to dust those all important photos, everyone in Great Spirit with Christmas looming, the plans were set.
What we didn’t know was, Mother Nature had other plans for that weekend, and we have never seen so much snow or chaos on our roads, railways and airports. But, situations like this make wedding planners, kick up two gears, set alternative plans into motion and structure how we get all of the suppliers and guests up a glen that currently is filling in hour by hour!. The castle were amazing in keeping the surrounding roads clear, and the main roads were hard packed snow so you can imagine anyone trying to travel without 4 wheel drive vehicles, were just like Bambi on ice. Slowly but surely guests and family arrived – Vicky’s parents arrived from the far south east of England having driven through the night when their flights were cancelled due to the airport closures. All but 15 guests managed to make the journey and at last we saw people relax.
The day of the wedding the minister was blocked into his homes, and he was one person we needed, so we organised for all the suppliers, to get to one location, and then we drove them individually as they arrived, up to the Castle, our main aim despite the atrocious weather conditions were to make Stephen and Vicky’s day as we had planned it with as little additional stress as possible for everyone. Its the role of a wedding planner to take this stress from the bride and groom, they have enough to think about without extra worry! Guests donned their Wellie boots, hats, coats and gloves and walked down to the church – it was a lovely bright clear day, but freezing cold, and everyone was really excited to be in this amazing castle, in fantastic scenery with snow everywhere – for the time being nobody cared about the conditions and getting home, well that was for another day!
4 wheel drive vehicles were commandeered – they were the bride’s sleigh - slightly different but it added to the fun of the day. How more romantic could it be, a lone church in the middle of a glen, the silence snow somehow brings, and inside this lovely little church it was cosy warm with the soft ambiance of candles and the beautiful fragrance of flowers. Vicky looked totally stunning she was like a snow queen, her beautiful gown with its long train and a lovely little fur around her shoulders – she was happy so many had managed to be there with them both at such a special time given the weather conditions. Reverend Ian as ever put them both at ease and gave them a lovely, humorous ceremony. The bride and groom emerged from the church to the sounds of the piper - both beaming and ready for their celebrations. Photos were taken – the snow gave us so many opportunities we may not have otherwise had – Vicky was a star wading through snow drifts, she was going to make the most of this day.
Guests enjoyed drinks and canapés before being invited into the ballroom for dinner. The room was amazing, surrounded with candles and each table having a tall rustic candle stand with tiny cups throughout the flowers each holding an individual candle just the atmosphere you want to create when it’s a freezing cold snowy night outside.
After dinner guests retired to the drawing room while the ballroom was turned around for dancing and for the music to set up for the evening. It’s a lovely time, everyone has had a gorgeous day, a beautiful meal with wines and they are now ready to dance the night away – the Bride and Groom opened the dancing, so let the party begin! A fabulous fun night – great dancing, great music, and a wonderfully happy Bride and Groom – it really was a fairytale day.
Of all the weddings we have done in 14 years, this one made us pull on all our experience gained over many years. It’s the job of a wedding planner to act quickly, sensibly and logically in times like this, situations change hourly and you have to able to adjust and keep control – I am happy to say despite mother nature playing her Ace card, we all came up trumps and we all had an amazing day we will remember forever.
Bride and Groom’s Kind Comments:
From the minute we first met George & Kimmie when trying to decide if we should use a wedding planner, we knew that they would be a wonderful couple to help us plan our wedding weekend! With us both living and working in London and without having much knowledge of the area where we wanted to get married we knew it was so important to have knowledgeable and well connected people to help us plan our special day, and we certainly found that with George & Kimmie.
During the 18 months we planned our wedding, I can honestly say we never found any of it stressful (unlike most couples we know) it was very reassuring to know that we had people looking for the right suppliers and helping us make the right choices for the weekend. It was such a benefit to use their vast knowledge not only of local supplier but also of people who could travel up to the castle as it was pretty remote. We both enjoyed the various meetings we had with George & Kimmie and always felt that we were in capable hands. The last minute build up to the wedding was rather stressful (to say the least) in particular the day before the wedding. Drumtochty is an amazing place to get married but we had to deal with the fact we could hardly get any phone reception along with the 3 foot of snow. However, with George & Kimmie pulling together and keeping us calm we got through it and on the Saturday we had the most amazing day. The setting was picture perfect, and everything went according to plan! We both had the most awesome wedding. We had so many people comment on the whole weekend and especially the smaller touches like the flowers and candles that just made the perfect winter wonderland wedding!
Thank you both so much for all your hard work and effort in making our dream wedding come true. Vicky & Stephen Smith
